Joan M Woodford, 86, passed peacefully at the Oak Knoll Healthcare Center in Framingham MA on May 25, 2021 after a long battle with dementia. We give thanks to God for this loving soul who did her best to be a supportive mother, grandmother, teacher and friend to those she new.
Joan was born in Shaker Heights, Ohio a suburb of Cleveland to the parents of Anna E Harkin and John Little who were both immigrants from Scotland. She grew up an only child and enjoyed riding and showing horses and playing field hockey in her younger years. She attended Laurel School pre-college and received her undergraduate degree from Denison University and her master’s degree from University of Dayton both in education. Joan was an English and Social Studies teacher at Kettering Middle School in Kettering Ohio for 32 years before retiring to various locations in Florida including a long stay in Jacksonville. Joan enjoyed substitute teaching in her retirement in various high schools along with her new passion of playing tennis, which she played competitively through age 80. As a teacher, she received many appreciations from students including being selected the teacher of the year as a nearly full-time substitute teacher in Fla.
Joan enjoyed being a Mom and Grandmother and spending time with family. She shared her love of horses with her daughter, Maryann, traveling to many competitions in the Ohio area with horse in tow. At a moments notice, she would fly to visit and babysit her granddaughter Mackenzie, her pride and joy. She also enjoyed traveling abroad- making trips to England to visit her family along with several side trips to Italy, Ireland and Scotland her home country.
Joan is survived by her daughter Maryann Wilcox, her son-in-law Robb Wilcox, her granddaughter Mackenzie Wilcox and her grand dog London who live in Holliston, MA.
Family and friends will honor, remember and celebrate Joan's life privately.
