Obituary

David J. Murphy, 85, a lifelong resident of Framingham, died Sunday, November 7, 2021 after a short period of declining health.  Born in Framingham, he was the son of the late Daniel & Alice  (Lynch) Murphy.

David was a 1954 graduate of Framingham High School.  He was a self taught craftsman who specialized in carpentry, and later custom cabinetry.  David opened his own business, David J. Murphy and Sons in 1967.  With his wife Noreen by his side as his office manager, and later his 2 sons Jim and David as craftsman, and daughter Colleen who joined upon David’s retirement, they built a lasting reputation that still stands in the community.  His family continues to operate the business to this day. He instilled a legacy of honesty, loyalty, integrity and hard work in all 5 of his children.  In his retirement, David was known for his many projects. He was generous with his talent and gifted his projects to family and friends on many gift giving occasions.

David was a devout Catholic and a member of St. George Parish.  He loved being with family.  David was diligent about preserving his family’s heritage through storytelling, record keeping, and photographs.  David was very social.  He remained active throughout his life with his high school classmates, lifelong friends, participation in bowling and bocce leagues, and daily trips to the local coffee shops.  David had a great sense of humor and enjoyed a good joke until the very end of his life.  David and Noreen spent many weekends and summer vacations at their home away from home in York Beach, ME. He will be missed by many.

In 1958, David married his sweetheart, Noreen (Shea) Murphy.  Together they raised 5 children.  David is survived by his children: Jim & his wife Terry, David & his wife Sheila, Colleen Daniels & her husband John, Marybeth Osborne & her husband Doug, and Christine Paget and her husband Phil, all of whom reside in Framingham.  David is also survived by his 14 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews on the East and West coasts. David was predeceased by his wife Noreen (2017), sister Mary, and brother Daniel.

Family and friends will honor and remember David’s life by gathering for visiting hours in the McCarthy, McKinney & Lawler Funeral Home, 11 Lincoln St., Framingham on Friday, November 12th from 4 – 8 P.M.   His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday morning at St. George’s Church, 74 School St., Framingham at 10 o’clock. Interment will follow in St. Stephen’s Cemetery.
