Tom was born in Somerville and graduated from Boston College High School in 1951. He proudly served in the United States Air Force for five years during the Korean War. Upon his return, he worked at the Lenox Hotel in Boston which sparked an interest and talent in the hospitality industry. With the encouragement and support of the hotel owner who was a Cornell University alumnus, he applied to the Cornell School of Hotel Administration and graduated in 1960. This experience and education changed his life. While at Cornell, he met his wife and established many life-long friendships. It also was the start of his long career in the hospitality industry. He worked for the Howard Johnson Company for 30 years, ultimately serving as Vice President of Real Estate. Upon leaving, he established his own business as an independent consultant in the hospitality industry, including working extensively with the Au Bon Pain Company for many years until his recent illness.
Tom was passionate about his family and friends, and enjoyed cooking, traveling, and watching his grandchildren grow up. He never fully retired because he loved working and interacting with people so much. He especially enjoyed mentoring young professionals, helping them with their careers, and generally imparting his wisdom and advice on life and work to anyone in need of his guidance. He was active in his community and in the local and national alumni groups for Cornell University.
Family and friends will honor and remember Tom’s life by gathering for visiting hours in the McCarthy, McKinney & Lawler Funeral Home, 11 Lincoln St. Framingham, on Friday, January 25th from 4 – 8 P.M. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday in St. Bridget’s Church, 830 Worcester Rd. (Rt. 9 E) at 12 noon. Interment will be private.
