It is said that a coach will impact more young people in a year than the average person does in a lifetime. That couldn’t ring more true for Walter R. Sullivan, 62, a longtime Framingham resident who died unexpectedly at home on Monday, May 1, 2017. Born in Boston and raised in Wayland, he was the son of the late Edward J. & Ada K. (Mulhall) Sullivan, and the beloved husband of the late JoAnne M. (Piazza) Sullivan.

Wally was a 1972 graduate of Wayland High School, and received his bachelors’ degree from Merrimack College. He married the love of his life, JoAnne in 1982 and settled in Framingham where they raised their two children. He founded Sullivan & Powers, a Telecommunication sales company, and later T.W.I., which provides installation services.

Wally coached youth, high school and college hockey for more than 40 yrs., most recently for the last 10 yrs. at Becker College in Worcester. He was a longtime parishioner, usher, and school supporter at St. Bridget’s in Framingham. In 1987 he joined the Framingham Country Club where he was known to always have a fist pump greeting for everyone, a smile on his face and a genuine hello. Wally loved spending time with his grandsons, and vacationing with his loving companion Terri Kanieff.

He is survived by his children, Patrick J. of Framingham, and Meaghan Ocasio & her husband Juan of Framingham, his grandsons, Jason & Jackson Ocasio, his siblings, Edward “Ted” of Natick, and Maureen E. of Framingham, and his nieces and nephews, Suzanne & Dan Richardson, Marianne Thomas, Lauren and Lexa Piazza, James, Emily, Abbigail and Savannah.

Family and friends will honor and remember Wally’s life by gathering for visiting hours in the McCarthy, McKinney & Lawler Funeral Home,11 Lincoln St., Framingham on Thursday, May 4th from 3 – 8 pm. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday morning in St. Bridget’s Church, 830 Worcester Rd. (Rt. 9E), at 11 o’clock. Interment will follow in St. Stephen’s Cemetery.

Soon after the death of his wife, Walter and his children started the JoAnne M. Sullivan Memorial Fund, which raises research monies for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in an effort to find a cure.  In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to that fund at: 6 Leonard Road, Framingham, MA 01701.
